We know that sex offenders can intentionally target child-serving organizations to access children. In Canada, there are several prevention programs that address the issue of personal safety for children, however they fail to address the specific risks children face within organizations. Commit to Kids is a program to help organizations create safe environments for children. It provides strategies, policies, and a step-by-step plan for reducing the risk of child sexual abuse.
Commit to Kids will help organizations:
- Prevent child sexual abuse through increased awareness and education
- Teach employees/volunteers difference between appropriate and inappropriate behaviour
- Provide specific strategies on how to prevent abuse
- Design programs that focus on child safety and supervision
- Establish clear boundaries between adults and children
- Ensure that allegations of child sexual abuse are handled in a sensitive, timely and effective manner
- Understand their legal obligations to report child sexual abuse
- Ensure the highest standard of practice when working with children
Commit to Kids is for all organizations that work with children and youth.
Commit to Kids consists of a program for child-serving organizations, training videos and presentations, worksheets and checklists, sample code of conduct and child protection policies, and a guide for parents.
